Planting & Care Guidelines of newly planted
trees and shrubs
We now have nearly 300 Michigan hardy plant species and cultivars.
See Available Species
We at Skyhorse Station have been busy evaluating some new and exciting
plants and expanding our line of plant material. We how have nearly 300
Michigan hardy plant species and cultivars. Our selelction of woody ornamentals
is one of the most extensive in Livingston County. We hope that this diversity
will help create a more beautiful environment for our customers.
We have a comprehensive Plant Reference Guide available.
Most of our customers will be pleased that we have listed plant material
by their common name (rather than Latin). Our emphasis is to have a more
customer friendly reference guide, with alphabetical listings. Also, we
have added Tree/Shrub Limb Silhouettes to help with the mental imaging
of a mature plant.
By utilizing the latest growing techniques and equipment, (on hardy, genetically
superior transplants from reliable sources) our fields have consistently
produced results beyond expectations. We feel that there just isn't any
excuse for poor quality! We have made significant investments in new irrigation
systems and farm equipment to make our operations more efficient.
Our triple annual fertilization program includes a state-of-the-art
biostimulant complex. This program includes Mycorrhiza, seaweed, fish
extract, and amino acids, etc. Few nurserymen appreciate (or can spell)
mycorrhiza fungi! But in nature, these not-so-glorious beneficial fungi
keep the plant kingdom rolling. Our root dips and soil inoculations increase
the absorptive root surfaces by hundreds of times. Increased root surface
dramatically improves moisture and nutrient absorption and translocation
from the soil to the root and to the plant tissues. This complex fertilization
program produces superior foliage, leaf color, flower bud set, and encourages
aggressive root development. The plants are hardier and healthier with
dramatically reduced field mortality. The plants increase vigor
reduces effects of dry summer and cold winter stress, while increasing
disease and insect resistance; ultimately, our program produces a superior
tree with a faster growth rate. Our triple inspection program
helps us to provide premium quality trees that the marketplace demands.
First, our plantings are rigidly inspected and culled each year, then
again prior to digging, and finally, just prior to shipping. Our heavy
soil structure produces a solid root ball at transplanting, and desirable
physical characteristics from the ground up; tough fibrous root systems
attached to good caliper trunks that support crisp coloration on full
symmetrical branching. These healthy, vigorous trees should continue to
produce superior results with proper care.
We extend to you an open invitation to visit our growing fields and to
place your orders early. Why wait until the last minute to book your tree
orders? Give us a call today!
